A Quick Symphonia Update - November 2024

Symphonia

Eight years ago John Chapin and I had been working together at an ad-tech company, enjoying building software in new ways using Lambda, S3, Kinesis, and other AWS services known collectively as “serverless” technologies. We wanted to carry on working with these same tools and the best way for us to do so was to go independent and start a consulting business. And so Symphonia was born.

Over these years we’ve worked with a little over fifty clients, wrote a couple of books, recorded a video course, traveled around the world to speak at conferences, and learned a lot. We also had a good amount of fun!

But the universe moves on, and John has decided to take an in-house job, joining some old friends of ours at Stripe. John and I are still very good friends (I can almost see his apartment from my window) and so I get to laugh at him having to cope with bureaucratic HR processes again, while he can smugly tell me about the joys of income miraculously appearing in his bank account without having to send invoices.

This raises a big question - what am I doing? And what is the future of Symphonia?

I am still very happy being independent, and so Symphonia is carrying on as a one-man-band.

Over more recent years I’ve been able to consolidate my knowledge of various aspects of serverless architecture, from serverless data engineering, to application migration, to DevOps, and more. I’ve learned a good many things along the way that still aren’t what I would consider “common practice”, and so I look forward to continuing to put my knowledge and experience to good use with a variety of clients. And what’s more these technologies continue to mature and gain capabilities, so I’m never going to get bored!

So keep an eye here on my blog, and if you need some help in your company dealing with a thorny problem, or want some help deciding on strategy related to AWS and serverless architecture, then drop me a line.
